Developing Plastic Products

When we have a brilliant idea we may envision it will only take a few minutes on the suitable machine to turn it into a finished product. However, in the process of translating the idea into a product we discover that the development process is complex and challenging, including a range of parameters we didn’t consider beforehand.

This holds true for every product, regardless of the raw material from which it is made of. The following is a brief description of the process involved in the development of a product made of plastic, including the major challenges characterizing the development process.

Plastic – the most versatile raw material

One of the unique properties of plastic as a raw material used to manufacture products is its great versatility. Plastic can be used to manufacture toys and small accessories, furnishing, storage and design items, as well as products used in building processes and construction structures. This versatility is wonderful news for the world, but for anyone developing a new plastic-based product poses a real challenge. One of the most important decisions in the plastic product development process is the type of plastic that will be used, and there are quite a few types: PET used to manufacture plastic beverage bottles, HDPE and LDPE – two versions of Polyethylene, PP – which is Polypropylene, ABS, PC – Polycarbonate, Polyamide – a nylon with and without glass fibers, and a long list of other types of plastic with different structural properties and characteristics. And, as if this was not enough, each of these types of plastic can be mixed in any dosage and in any combination in order to obtain a mixture with the required product properties: structural strength, withstanding falls and impact, gas permeability, sealability, flexibility and more.

Choosing the right production technology

An additional important key component of the plastic product development process is the selection of the suitable production technology. The plastic world includes different types of production processes, the most common of which is injection molding, alongside blow molding, extrusion and others. Each technology has its own characteristics, advantages and limitations, and each requires a specific type of mold which the production machine uses to produce the specific product. Development of the mold itself can be very complex and costly, requiring a professional process of enhancement and optimization. Plastic product entrepreneurs must also be prepared for certain compromises which must often be made in order to tailor the product to a specific production technology based on professional, engineering or economic considerations. Ultimately, the production process itself must be enhanced in the aim of achieving the highest efficiency level, reducing the production cost of every product unit as much as possible.

Planning and design

All the above is connected to the critical stage of product planning and design. All technical considerations regarding the production process, production properties, regulatory limitations (for example engineering features or food packaging limitations), functionality, durability and more, must already be considered at the planning stage. Throughout this entire process, the success of the plastic product development process is almost all but unattainable without professional accompaniment – regardless of how simple you think your product is, the process should be accompanied and handled by the most experienced professionals with expertise in this specific product area.
